Nestled at the bottom of the hillside above the meandering River Swale is the tiny but delightful village of Muker, a mile away from the Bunkbarn.
Muker’s location high in the Yorkshire Dales National Park remains the focal point for a thriving local farming industry and is also a popular thoroughfare for walkers, hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists. The local pub and tearoom are popular lunch stops at the midway point of a day’s walking through Swaledale.
Muker is home to fewer than 100 people. The village is surrounded by dry-stone walls, and a large number of dry-stone field barns. The jewel in the crown being the famous Muker meadows, seen in their full glory in June.
For the many visitors to Upper Swaledale the abundance of flowers, and their wonderful setting, provide a feast for the eyes. It’s impossible not to return from a walk through the meadows uplifted and inspired.
Just one of the many features that beautifully complement the dramatic scenery of Upper Swaledale.
There is an excellent volunteer ” Little White Bus Service” which goes up and down the dale and stops in Muker. Visit www.littlewhitebus.co.uk for more information.
